BUS SAFETY!! We learned why it is important to stay seated and quiet while on the bus. We also leaned that we must listen to the drivers and follow their directions to be safe. A great experience for all the students.
THANK YOU BUS DRIVERS!!

Wow! What happened to January - a blur of one snow day after another. Hopefully, we will have better weather this month and consistent days in school! As you can imagine, all the schedule changes are challenging for our students. Please continue to help your child do a couple of lessons a week on the i-Ready website at home. We have new rewards for students who try their best!
If you need an i-Ready refresher, see the following directions below.
Think SPRING!
www.I-Ready.com
Just a note to share some i-Ready tips on how to tell the number of lessons that your child completed:
1. Choose Reading or Math
2. Near the top of the page, next to your name there will be 3 tabs (kind of in the middle with yellow letters)
3. Go to My Progress
You will see a bar graph
4. At the top of My Progress in the blue band are 2 choices
5. Go to Details
6. On the left-hand side of each Strand, there is a blue circle with an arrow
7. Click on the arrow
8. Look at dates - (Our contest started Feb 1st. Any lesson after that date counts!!)
9. Count completed lessons (They have green checkmarks) (Failed lessons with a red X will NOT count)
10. Go to the next Strand
11. Repeat steps 6 - 10
12. Close out and change over to Reading or Math (the other one!)

We had so much fun during the Harvest parade and party - and our students were quite decked out in their costumes! A BIG thank you to our PTA for providing us with yummy cupcakes and to our class parents who contributed goodies! This week we read books about pumpkins, carved a pumpkin and painted individual pumpkins. We tried toasted pumpkin seeds-none of the students liked them... We learned about how a pumpkin grows and sang lots of pumpkin songs.
All in all, it was a great week in room 5!

Pumpkins, pumpkins, pumpkins! We are all about the big, round, orange squash this week. And of course making preparations for our Harvest parade and party on Friday. If your child is dressing up for the parade, costumes need to be brought to school in a paper bag. We will help all the students to get dressed for the parade.
We would love to have you come watch the parade at 2:15pm.

What a busy week! A BIG thank you to all of the grandparents who joined us for our morning routine and a snack Friday morning. It was wonderful seeing our students doing their AM movement routine and yoga with their grandparents. Our students also shared their calendar, math and singing skills. We our grandparents enjoy the beautiful butterflies made by our students.
We also learned about keeping safe on the bus by practicing on a real bus!
And... we learned about the U.S. Constitution. All of the students respond when we shout, "We the People!"

Reading Often Achieves Results
November 21, 2012
Dear Families,
Students in grades K-3 with an Individual Education Plan (IEP) in reading are beginning an at-home READING ROAR CHALLENGE. It is so important that students read as often as possible to improve their reading fluency and comprehension. I am challenging our students to see how many minutes we can read by the end of the school year.
Each Friday, books and reading materials will come home in a special folder. Students will return the folders to school on the following Thursday to be filled with new reading material. Students are to read and record the number of minutes read each night on the READING LOG kept in the folder. They also need your initials on the Reading Log. Please feel free to comment on your child’s reading OR ask questions/comment! Please also take a moment to review the suggestions of ways you can encourage your child in their reading on the folder. These are strategies we use at school.
Please do not be concerned if some of the reading material appears too easy for your child. Research indicates that repeated reading of EASY books and materials is the key to developing reading fluency skills which then leads to greater comprehension, Reading done on the computer, such as on iReady or RazKids, can also be included in minutes read. Just record it on the log.
Thank you for your help in making this reading challenge part of your family’s evening routine! This is just one more step in helping your child become a competent, confident, lifelong learner.
Farewell, Ms. Rachel Davis, our student teacher!
Ms. Davis, a senior at the University of Akron, completed her time student teaching in our room. She is now in Germany student teaching at a military base. We are proud that she is a graduate of Cuyahoga Falls High School! She is working toward teacher licensure in both general and special education. We look forward to hearing about her adventure when she returns for a visit in December.
Ohio's New Core Standards for Learning
Beginning this year, our school district is using the new ohio core standards as a basis to instruct your child in all subject areas. These standards were adopted in 2011 by several states. Core standards are statements of learning which your child is expected to know and be able to do at his/her grade level. More information on the learning objectives for your child's grade level can be found at the link provided here.
