Parents, YOU can do so much to reinforce the math concepts your child is learning through your daily home routines.
Breakfast time:
Have your child look at the side of the cereal box to determine how much a serving is and how many servings in the box (measurement).
On the way to school:
COUNT. COUNT. COUNT. The streets to school, the stop signs or lights. The minutes it takes to get to school, etc...(number sense).
After school:
Odd or even. Talk about whether your family has an odd or even number of members~think pairs for even numbers (operations and algebraic thinking)
Evening:
Help your child construct a map of your house, street, neighborhood or park using shapes (geometry).
Help your child set an alarm clock to help them wake up. Count the hours that pass as they sleep ( elapsed time).
Check back often for more ideas of how to incorporate math discussions into your daily lives!
Be sure to practice your math facts several times each week!
Help mom or dad by telling time and counting the minutes or hours that elapse between events in your day.
